The number of hammer blows required to drive the sampler into the soil is recorded as the SPT N-value, commonly referred to as the blow count. This information helps engineers better understand the density and consistency of the soils encountered.
The sampler also collects a soil sample that can be visually classified in the field and, when needed, sent to a laboratory for additional testing.
